The "sea" in the diorama was made by applying acrylic modeling paste to the plywood base. A rubber spatula was used to shape the modeling paste into waves. The ship model was placed into the modeling paste while it was still pliable. Once the paste cured, it was painted with acrylic paints. A coat of acrylic gel medium produced a high gloss "wet" finish. Gel medium and white paint created the effect of the foamy wake and bow wave genereated by the ship's motion.
