Dan, an amazing website! I used to be quite a comic collector in the 1980s, but had gotten away from it. A few days ago, my dad, who grew up during WWII asked me if I had ever heard of the Blackhawk Squadron, because he had just gotten a Grumman Skyrocket mode kit and wanted to build it after his favorite comic book heroes of his childhood. I looked on the internet and found your site. Dad is estatic that I could download decals! Karl

How nice to find a site on my favorite comics series. When DC produced the run by Evanier and Spiegle, the editor in charge commissioned me to do a new version of the logo. It embarasses me to say that, in streamlining it to fit the format requirements, I managed to take out all the charm.

This is an outstanding website!! Can anyone supply information on the Blackhawks in DC animated cartoons of the late 1960s? I believe that they may have been in the Aquaman series. I recall an ad showing them in red uniforms, if I remember correctly. T anks!

I cried the day I found out that my parents had thrown away my Blackhawks "funny books" when I went away to college and got married. I began buying (collecting?) them at Lomax's Drug store in Memphis, Tennessee in 1944, when I was 7. I quit reading them n the early '50s.

These wonderful comics I collected when I was just 12 years old. I actually looked forward to reading their adventures each month, as did at least four other friends on my block. I'm now about 57 years old and have started a collection of issues (I've s arted with #56 in 6.o condition) and plan to attend the comic fair here in San Diego in search of other issues. They are not easy to find in decent condition. Love your web site and remain in touch.......Bill Durham

Outstanding... I collected Blackhawk comic book years ago because of an interest that I shared with my father and have been trying to get involved in the comics again. Your site really got me excited-Thank You! The one thing that I found missing was information on the "Uncle Sam Quarterly" comics. Since the Blackhawk comic series picked up at #9 after the "Uncle Sam Quarterly" - I would love to see scans of covers and info on this early series and how/why it le to Blackhawk #9. Highest regards, Germain DeMartinis

Thanks for asking me if it was OK to post my comments regarding Chuck & Will's Blackhawk talk at the 1999 San Diego Comicon. It was good to finally place certain origin concepts to rest after all these years. The Blackhawk Trade Corner back with #225 (1966) was part of my main introduction into organized comics fandom. The Trade Corner was a pivotal nexus for comics fans to network back then. I am working on a comics business history book and have uncovered many exciting comics adverts. I sending you two JPEGs of vintage 1950 and 1951 advertisements ran by Quality Comics I have uncovered to promote Blackhawk comic books, the radio show (Wedne day at 5:30 PM coast to coast on ABC) as well as the Blackhawk Motion Picture which debuted in the summer of 1952. I am the eldest niece of Chas N. "Chuck" Cuidera and couldn't be more thrilled about the excitement you are providing thousands of Blackhawk fans with this superb website. I remember quietly sitting on a high stool in my Uncle's home studio, as a child, watching him draw and ink Blackhawk and, later, being given the "supreme honor" of removing (With a giant, gummy eraser!) his slightly visible drawing guidelines from the large, comic-paneled placards he had completed. I can still smell the aroma of his art supplies and remember clearly his deep breathing and concentration, comfortable body language and intense facial expression as he worked at a large drawing table. I don't know who the bigger hero was for me then ... Blackhawk or my Uncle Charles himself! Not long ago, my Uncle, now in his mid-eighties, drew, inked and colored his original Blackhawk characters and presented them as mementos to some members of his extended family. I consider mine a treasure as Chas Cuidera (Despite some claims to the contrary.) was, is and shall always be "the heart and soul" of Blackhawk.

Just to let everyone know, I was able to find info on Spy Smashers' Gyro sub, as it's called. Thanks to a major metropolitan library, I found issues of Whiz Comics from the 40's on microfiche. Spy Smasher was a regular character, and I was able to make a few photocopies. I still could use some help with any info as to the type of plane that Captain Midnight flew. I would appreciate any thing anyone could tell me.

Great site. Maybe someone can help me. I'm looking for info on two other famous flyers from the 40's Captain Midnight and Spy Smasher. I'm mainly interested in finding any drawings or pics of the craft each flew. From what I've read, Captain Midnight flew a supercharged plane, and Spy Smasher had a multi purpose vehicle that could travel on land, in the air and underwater. If any one has any of these books, would it be possible for them to scan a couple of pics, and post them on this site? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I expected to find something but I thought it would be some ind of a DC site. Have been to many other sites involving comics and related stuff (I am also a scale modeler and President of my local chapter of IPMS in Rochester NY) so your site is more than I ever dreamed of. I have been reading (purchasing) Blackha k since 1956 or so and have followed their various incarnations ever since. I have also looked back at whatever older issues I could find. I've begun working on an F-86 that I'm going to do as a Blackhawk and follow that with a Buccaneer and a C-130. The way I see it, Blackhawk and his crew had to have a multitude of aircraft to fulfill their missions and also used prototypes supplied by various governments & aircraft manufacturer's (NATO/US). I'll scan in pictures as I complete them and let you see my work, but please keep in mind my modeling efforts don't compare to yours. Again, I really enjoyed your site. Glenn

Dear Dan: I find your site is really great, and, as a firm fan of the "Blackhawk" team, I must sincerely congratulate you for the good work, and also thank you warmly for the good time you give us fans with your nostalgic lore. Only, I must confess I exec ate the Howard Chaykin version, which denaturalizes the character completely (The Hawk himself..., suspected Communist??? Please!), and denies everything of the established stuff. I also find the DC period inferior to that of Quality, but such are the way of comics, so what can one do? Loved your site. Hope you can expand the Mexican section. I must have bought hundreds of Mexican Halcón Negros. Most of the characters names were changed. Andre became Pierre, Olaf was Lars, Stanislaus was Stan, Hendrikson became Hendrick. Only Chuch kept his name.. Chop Chop was eased out. Even Blackhawk was christened, in an origin story as Liam O'Hara Some issues contained book length adventures. Many of them quite good.

Great site! While I'm a few years older, born in '42, the Blackhawks have always been a favorite of mine as well. Also like the other sci fi comics and books, particularly the DC and EC variety. I'm new to using the internet and computers in general so st ll learning my way around. I have some of the MODERN comics you are missing the story line on, and will try to email some info to you when I get the time. I travel in my work most weeks, so get less internet time than I would like. Keep up the great work. It's a fun site. Best, Roger

P>S> Blackhawk was in the movies. At least on Saturday matinees along with Tim Tylor and the Jungle Patrol, Don Winsloe and the Navy/Coast Guard and Buck Rogers. For some reason I've associated Airboy with the Blackhawk comics idea more than others. Is there a chat room on this? I think BH disappeared because it's authors forgot that their main reason for existance was to entertain and abet the imaginations of people who loved airplanes and the magic of flying and flying machines. I stopped buying them after a few issues with n airplanes or flying in them. It was sort of like the kindred spirits on the DC staff were taken over by someone/something that never flew with anything but chemicals. Oh well. This is a long overdue site. Havnt had the kids let me go on line enough t read all yet. Thank you

I've been upset about seeing a model of Blackhawk's jet in a Scale Modeler . It had one engine, not two as I have always seen it. I have a model of it scratch built about 48 years ago/ refinished some ten years ago. All the later years Blackhawk F5F's vary from the early in that they have spatted fixed landing gear. I think the aircraft varied with the artists. Sure would like to see the comics from before they had their own. They got me to spend 23 in the USAF, but never in the sleek F-90. I'd enj y chatting w/ anyone on this and/or modeling in general.

I love this site! A few years ago, I looked around for a BlackHawk site and walked away from my keyboard disappointed. Not any more. Clearly, this site is a labor of love. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the beautiful Grauman Skyrocket was not a failure. The F5F has got to be the coolest piston design in aviation history. The plane gave the Blackhawks a cool edge on the competition. If anyone is interested, the Mile High Comics page offers 61 issues of Blackhawk at a reasonable price. ll the best. Hawk-AAA!

Cool website. I too have long been interested in making models of various cartoon and comic book vehicles. I've been planning to make models of all the Batmobiles and Batplanes, from their first appearances to the current versions. I would also like to do the same with the Blackhawk planes and all of Wonder Woman's planes. I've been doing a lot of research, not only looking through the comics themselves, but in trying to find real-life counterparts to these craft. It seems that over the years, artists took existing vehicles and customized them to fit the various characters they were made for. I'd like to do the same. Maybe some day I'll finally build them.

Dear Dan, My maiden name is "Cuidera". Chuck is my Dad. I just learned about your site through my brother, Charles, in SanDiego. I think this is terrific and am forwarding this onto other family and friends. My Dad is undergoing some serious health issues at t is time and knowing that this exists will really help boost his morale! Although my parents don't have a computer, I will be sure to send them copies of what you have available here. They currently reside in Florida. Please feel free to e-mail me additional info &/or any comments. As the youngest of his 3 children I was fairly young when my dad left DC comics but I do recall when he used to ink the pages for them. He had a studio in our home and I remember going int the NY office with him and being introduced to artists like Bob Crane (Batman) and some of his other comtemporaries. This is certainly bringing back memories!!!! Many Thanks, Ellen M. Chiaramonte

Dan, I'm having a good time perusing your website! Although, I've just started, its whooly evident that you've done a remarkable job in cataloging and giving 'critical shape' to a huge amount of memorabilia and information. As you know my father Charles (a.k.a. Chuck) N. Cuidera was a key player in bringing this 'comic hero' to life. Although dad is retired (Ormond Beach, Florida) and not 'on-line,' I'm going to give him a call tommorrow (8/16/98) and tell him about what you've done here. I'm sure he'll bray at some of the recollections about the creation, evolution, and permutations of 'Blackhawk,' but overall, I believe he'll be way pleased when he gets a look at this! Best wishes, Charles L. Cuidera La Jolla, CA

Thanks for posting such a great site. Blackhawk was my favorite comic when I was growing up, but my interest lapsed when DC saw fit to make them pseudo-super heroes with funny costumes and augmented powers. When HC brought brought them back, I was disappo nted to see that he had made the group essentially anti-heros, lacking any of the nobility of the originals.

Great page! Blackhawk has been my favorite comic for a long time. I loved the Evanier/Spiegel series when I was 9-10 years old, though I find it kind of silly now. Unlike you, I love the revisionism of Chaykin and Pasko, but I think that things got stupid again when Doug Moench took over (why couldn't Pasko have done just one more issue and wrapped up his storyline properly?) -Jake Riordan ps- Do you think that the way the fake Blackhawks are depicted in #12 is meant to be a subtle jab at the boys' pre-Chaykin personas?
